Drysuits

The forum post about PFD's got me wondering how many of you are wearing drysuits or something similiar for cold water/weather fishing? I just ordered a Kotatat paddling suit for fishing:

The suit was on backorder last week. I wish I had it when a Eddyline Calypso yak I borrowed dumped me into a river last Saturday! I did have wool socks and wool thermals on so I stayed warm after my mishap.
The suit is not cheap but how can you put a price on your safety?

I go the cheap route. Farmer John neoprene chestwaders with fleece and warm long johns under. Kokotat drytop with wrist, waste, and neck gaskets. Thank goodness I haven't had to take a dip in cold water yet.

Never need a dry suit in My PA..... Dress in layers and shed as needed! Gotta love the PA!

I haven't had the chance to take the PA out into the Atlantic yet. However, if I ever do, I would still always prepare for the worst. Not sure where you fish or what the winter water temp is usually, but in Virginia....going out w/o proper winter water wear is tantamount to suicide if you end up in the drink. So far this year, we have lost at least two with one near fatality on the Eastern Shore. That guy only survived because he had a wetsuit. He was in the water for a couple of hours.

Bottom line, there is no such thing as too safe. The PA, as good a boat as it is, can still tip.

a covered relief zipper adds protection when handling your catch.

I guess that's a polite way to refer to your... er.... willy?

Probably the best invest you can make. It will extend your season by months, allowing you fishing time that you would normally be sitting on the couch. Make sure to take care it. Wax the zippers, and powder the wrist and neck seals. It will save your life with the use of a PFD, and after using one it will be hard to believe you didn't buy one sooner. I have the same one you bought and love it.
