I believe we have a few new things coming for the issue... I can't speak of details at the moment.

Matt, anything further you can tell us? Hobie is in the process of replacing my rudder system (warranty). If there is something new/revised going to be offered, maybe we could do the repair with the "newer" revisions????

Nothing yet. Changes only included a revised connection between the rudder shaft and the drum. Not important to the function.

[quote="reeltime123"]Ok The 1st try to fix the rudder issue went wrong, I used a piece of plexiglass and it worked until I got into swift current, and Broke, So I went back to the drawing board to fix this issue and made a custom made Aluminum rudder made out of 1\4" aluminum and made the rudder 1" bigger and 1" longer.

Thanks for the great idea.
Decided to do the same thing. Here is my version.

I wish Hobie made this as an "Option", just like they do for the twist and stow

It sure made a big difference when fitting teh sailing rudder to my Revo 13 and Outback.

For whatever it's worth, this was in the summer issue of Kayak Fish Magazine in their review on the PA12:

"The rudder is responsive. I'd spot good structure or fish on the sonar, port the helm control and turn on a dime."

It will turn on a dime but not necessarily when you want it to turn

Possibly. Their review, not mine.

Took the PA out on the bay with the new rudder upgrade. As always the steering was still very sensitive, with only very minor control movements. That is where the similarities stopped. While under way at 6kph, I no longer had to make constant course changes to keep the PA tracking through the current and swell. Occasional changes Yes, but a significant improvement. Which meant that I could spend my time preparing leaders and other rigs for the days fishing, all while trolling in a straight line. The other problem that others have commented about is the unwillingness of the PA to turn after starting from a dead stop. Particularly in a current, where you want to go left and the PA goes straight... often leading to a U-turn to the right.
With the larger rudder the PA turns much quicker at slow speeds and is better in faster currents.
All in all ....... Well worth the time and effort. It is staying on. :D :D :D

I have an Outback and a Revo 11. I've used both extensively for fishing, racing, etc. Just bought a new 2014 PA12. I do find the steering also to be squirrely on it. It does take a lot of work to keep the thing tracking straight, which I don't mind when I'm just cruising. But I do find it difficult to fight a fish when the boat all of a sudden starts turning abruptly when I've not touched the tiller.

I'm assuming mine has the newer, larger drum, and it does have the BOA tensioner. But still, compared to both of my other Hobies, this one is a challenge to fish with. I guess I'll be cutting myself a larger aluminum rudder to also see whether this can help. Other than the steering, I love the PA.
