what size anchor line works best for the PA14?? will 550 paraCorde work or should i get something deferent? i will be fishing fresh and salt water. tks George |

I have used military parachute cord in the past and it performs quite well. It is brutally strong I have never had an anchor line fail. A knot that is in paracord and stressed,when wet always seems more difficult to untie than one in poly rope. The only thing that I really do not like about it is that it will absorb water and sink. I have discovered that I prefer the yellow poly rope in approx the same diameter (or slightly larger)as it floats, is far more visible than olive drab para cord and, when it is wet, is marginally easier on the hands than nylon. Strength is not really an issue for me. After all, it's just a PA, and not the Queen Mary. My opinion, only. Regards..... |

I have a PA 14 and PA12. For both I use a small anchor (1&1/2 pound grapnel style) which I buy at my Hobie dealers. It can also be found at West Marine. For anchor line (Just as the above post I use parachute cord. Here in New England we have very rocky bottoms almost everywhere. to prevent the anchor from being stuck on the bottom, I attach the terminal end of the anchor line to the eye at the base of the anchor. I then attach the line to the anchor shank with a =n electrical TY-WRAP (very small) If my anchor gets stuck I take up all slack until I am over the anchor. Then give the line a hard yank (Not causing me to roll the YAK) the TY-WRAP breaks and I am able to pull my anchor up by its base. send me a message and I will email pictures. |

I love and believe in 550 for almost everything. I work w/ 550 on a daily basics. 550 is great and I keep extra w/ me at all times. I've personal seen 550 hold a shark w/o busting, while the steal leader did break. I do not use the 550 for my anchor for 2 reasons. 1 it does have a stretch in it, which I personal don't like. 2. after it gets wet a few times, does have a tendency to get moldy. I prefer the nylon anchor lines. I trust 550 for its strength, but not all uses is it the best for the job. |
