Post subject:  PA Rear Hatch

Just wondering if anyone else is encountering the same problem. The rear hatch does not lock down when I close the lid. The handle will twist and lock but the hatch lid itself doesn't seat down flat. I need to take my hand and pound it down flat. I had the same problem on the front center hatch on my Outback.

I keep the seal clean and lubed, but it seems that the fit is very tight and requires assistance to get it to close flat.

Anyone else???

Check to make sure the outer mounting ring isn't warped.

Also, if you have a gear bucket in there, take it out and check to see if that makes any difference.

There's an o-ring to seal it. Try some lube on the o-ring, maybe some Vaseline.

Twist and seal hatches do not need to seat flat to properly seal. The O-Ring is within a large Cylinder and not forced to seat between two flat surfaces just to get it sealed.

This is simply a cosmetic situation. Give it a tap if you want it flush, but not necessary.

Be sure you use silicone base lubricant. Oil based lubes will swell and damage the O-Ring.

FYI for the rear hatch. The seal between the flange of the hatch and the floor of the PA14 is a very thin and flimsy piece of foam. It even had cutouts to the two threaded bolts that hold the padeyes in place to restrain the rudder tubing. So with two aboard and that rear depression flooded from the water that comes up through the scuppers, we got a whole lot of water in the boat. Fortunately we had outriggers and that allowed us to keep the boat upright when the water inside wanted to roll us over by rushing to one side or the other. Made it to shore and bailed it out.

The very next day that hatch got removed and sealed with silicone rubber. Tested and no more leaks.
