I have never sailed but keep looking at this option. In the meantime, I carry my big golf umbrella and let the wind push me along when the opportunity arises

Hey, New guy here to the forums. I had a Hobie 12 back in the 70's and it was a blast. I am now looking at getting a PA this summer and was wondering if anyone has ever use a sail on one? If so how did it work out for you? Did you leave the drive in and use it like a drop keel or take it out? Could you would you use the drive with the sail for increased speed if the wind allowed? |

You'll need to leave the Mirage Drive in to act as a bit of a dagger board. It'll sail pretty well all things considered, just don't expect it to move like a catamaran. |

Bought a sail this winter, cant wait to use it in my PA12 &PA14. Last summer my fishing partner used a sail (PA14) to get back to Base Camp during the striper shootout (Salem Mass.) He was able to make quick work of the transit back from one of the Islands. (4 miles) He was able to make about 3.5 knots. (while I peddled back) |

I'd love to put one on my PA14, I just dont want to register the kayak with the DMV (or risk a ticket for not having numbers while sailing). Several times after a long day fishing I wished I could set sail for home though... |

Are you certain it would require registration? I know states differ one to another, but around here you can sail anything without a motor under 14 feet without having to register it. |

I wish it was 14 feet... "Generally, every sail-powered vessel over eight feet in length and every motor-driven vessel (regardless of length) that is not documented by the U.S. Coast Guard which is used or on the waters of this state are subject to registration by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The vessel must be located in California." |

Quick question... The sail looks so bulky - is it something you can stash away on board and drag it out if you *want* to use it and it not get in the way much I you don't? Is it a commitment to go sailing? I think it must stash away, you wouldn't want it up if your fishing, I just can't picture where it would go... Would it fit where the fishing rods go? |

The sail does furl up around the mast, as shown at the beginning of the video posted by MMiller. I would think that you could bungee it along the inside of the mid boat carrying handle bars. But you would need to bring your own bungees. Sorry that I can't help more. I'm sure someone on the forum will have a solution, the question is just whether or not that solution will work for you. |

Make one of these and leave it in place. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5_r4Nh51Ok I ran the line through a block and then to a small jam cleat under the mounting boards. Keeps the line up on the pipe and keeps the sail tightly furled. I used a piece of bungee cord to the foot of the sail to make it a bit compliant and to keep tension in the furled position. The Mirage drive does indeed act like a daggerboard. Keep the pedals even for maximum effect, even a little bit splayed and you get more sideslip. The drive is great for coming about into the wind. She likes to lay in irons otherwise. So a little thrust with the drive brings it right around. And yes downwind both sail and drive make the going nice and easy as well as fast. |
