Interesting that Hobie Cat made no comments here on this project.

Impressive job!

You can bet they are watching  Probably don't want to encourage this type of thing as it could be a problem for someone if a warranty issue ever came up. :?: :?: :?:

Islandspeed is probably right. I'm sure Hobie has been following my progress on this.

Following this statement I don't think they will frown on me doing this. They know that I know I have VOIDED ANY WARRANTY CLAIM I might ever have on the hull. But the way I see it hull claims are filed because of cracks and what not. That being said, anything short of tearing my yak in half, I think I got it covered as long as I have my welder handy. So that type of warranty claim does not apply to me.

I knew before I started this project that it would VOID THE HULL WARRANTY because of the extensive amount of changes I was making to Hobie's design.

Hobie SHOULD NOT/WILL NOT be held responsible for this hull at this point. My decision=my responsibility, should any problems arise. I'm thankful to Hobie for making such a cool product for me to tinker with.

This type of mod is not for everyone even though I'm sure there's alot of guys out there who would love this feature on their older PA's. Bottom line: If you're not absolutely sure of your skills, don't attempt this. And know that, in my opinion, Hobie's responsibility to your hull warranty should be zero if you do.

I put this project out there because I really wanted the new hatch and flat floor. I put about 2 months of hard thought into it before I made that first cut. I wanted to show people this could be done, and done well. I'm totally serious when I say the floor of my PA is stronger now than originally and my storage area in this location has nearly doubled. This is due in large part to Hobie's killer design and craftsmanship on the new hatch.

Hopefully Matt Miller will weigh in on this. I'm curious to here his take on it.

Thanks again,

Carl

Very nice job but c'mon, after all that you can't make a decent hatch liner? I like the bigger, flat hatch cover and I like tinkering, but that is way beyond an attempt by me to duplicate that project. Great work!!

You sir are a VERY braver and EXTREMELY talented man! Congratulations! Mine are not large enough to allow me to attempt such an endeavor, but you have done an EXCELLENT job and are to be commended! :D

I think it's great you are willing to share this idea for a potentially future profit venture. (Unlike another member's certain electric motor design .)

3 Cheers!!

Yes, don't you just hate that sort of thing. The guys who won't share are the absolute worst, aren't they? After all, they're obligated to publicly share anything they come up with.

I've made hundreds of posts here, including various Youtube videos, of all sorts of mods and ideas for stuff I've done for Hobie kayaks. I've enjoyed sharing them with this community and hope at least a few folks have benefitted in the process. It's fun. I wish more people would do it.

Back on topic, very impressive work on the hatch. When somebody proposes doing something like this it sends shivers up more than a few spines. But then you see the quality of work being done and all is right with the world.

Awesome modification. I looked into doing the same but didn't think it could work. And I do not have the skills. Have you tried standing on it to see the strength of it?
