I have, and they work well. As far as locking them down, there are available locking kayak straps as well as locking lasso cords designed specially for kayaks. Google is your friend!

Has anybody used the Yakima Hullyrollers and Mako Aero Kayak Saddles to load and carry a PA 14? I have a Toyota Sequoia am thinking of buying this setup. Also, any suggestions for locking the kayak on the top rack so it will be there in the morning when I get up. |

I am guessing some typical steel security ropes thru the scuppers or mirage drive opening wrapped around your supports would work for locking it down. I use Hully Rollers on my Durango. I mounted them about six inches apart to conform to the center keel on my PA-14. That gave me better support and much more control when loading/unloading the boat. I use two ratcheting cargo straps to cinch the boat down to the racks, and a front tiedown rope to hold the bow down at freeway speeds. The boat never moves.  Here's the first step in loading it. Note how the bow sits firmly between the rollers. If they were farther apart, the narrow bow could slide to either side when the stern is lifted.

Hondo, check the posts by TDK on this forum for his setup. I just did the same thing using a Showboat as well and it is flawless IMO. |

I originally started with 4 Mako Shark mounts, after I noticed they were leaving dents in the hull I added two more mounts for a total of 6. Even with 6 of the Mako Shark mounts to spread the load there were still dents, mostly in the middle and rearmost mounts. I leave my PA on the trailer all the time but it is not strapped down when stored. I ended up taking the mounts off and now I use 4" black ABS pipe the length of the PA, after a while the dents gradually faded away. YMMV................ I use a 3/8" security cable through the Mirage drive hole and secure the cable to the trailer with a big lock. You could cable your PA to the reciever hitch if you have one. |
