What is the longest rod that you can fit in the horizontal rod holders on a 2010 PA14 without having the butt end extend up on the rear deck, or interfere with the steering knob? I want to get a lighter weight trolling / jigging rod for walleye that will be out of the way when I am out on the big water with my deepwater gear, but permit me to switch programs without going back to the truck to switch rods. Anybody know if it is practical to store a broken-down 2-piece rod in one horizontal storage tube in order to preserve the tackle storage space next to the seat?

Not sure about maximum rod length but don't forget you should be able to take out the front hatch gear bucket and squeeze rods down into the hull. Lots of space down there. :D

I just went out to my Yak and stuffed a 7 foot 6 inch spinning rod into the rod tube and had about 4 inches to spare to the crossover behind the rear seat. So maybe a 7 foot 9 inch rod?

I tried every which way to stuff it in broken down into two pieces and it would not go. The butt section is too stiff to bend into the storage tube.

I never carry rods in those tubes since I have extra rod holders which makes room for six rods in holders. I put two I might use in the useless built in by Hobie holders behind me and two up front in two of the adjustable holders as I usually fish two rods.

I make full use of the in-board rod storage. Never understood why anyone would want rods not in use just getting in the way. :P

They sure as heck aren't in the way in those useless holders behind you. Can hardly reach those holders to get the to the rods.

I do use the tubes to hold the fishing net, pliers, prop straightner for the trolling motor, a plastic bag for on water elimination, fish rag, filet knife, and for the looped rope for the front anchor. Fills all those up nicely.

I use them only when trolling or to store my fish net. No problem reaching the rear holders for me. For someone with a Hobie and being on the Hobie forum, you seem to have more than your share/crit of the Hobie products.

I had good luck with 2 piece fly rods in the tubes.

So it sounds like an 8' rod in one piece, or possibly a longer broken-down 2 piece non-spinning rod would probably fit in the horizontal rod storage tubes. Basskicker - good idea about using the front storage hatch space. I usually have the full tub in place, so wrestling that out in any sort or waves or heavy chop could be an issue. It has still got to be better than a trip back to the truck to get the lightweight gear, though. My PA is stored at my cottage - I will hopefully be able to try some of these options out this weekend. Thanks for the advice, all.
