I had my PA12 tipped for 45 minutes , didn't think about the front hatch until back on land. Boat seemed haevy, found the hatch 1/2 full and I stood on the hull when it was yupside down. It did not sink. 2o feet of water. |

My hull gets a good quart of water in it from just sitting on the trailer in a couple days worth of rain. Only thing I can figure is that it comes in around the screw holes. All hatches are shut and sealed, but the water still gets in! In the end, it doesn't really bother me. I just chock it up to being part of enjoying a water sport. As long as I don't get wet in the boat and I'm still catchind fish I'm happy! |

I checked the Hobie catalog and found: 71301001 HATCH SEAL "TRIM-LOC". I think this is the stuff but can't be sure. If you call Backyard Boats, (800) 227-6132 they can confirm it. The material has metal in the seam that makes it almost impossible to remove once in place. |

As a former submarine sailor I am familiar with the habits of seawater and its desire to occupy submerged unflooded space. The forward hatch could open when the PA is overturned if the locker contains something heavier than the the weight of the hull above it. Some water may trickle in if the seal is slightly compromised. But if you were to climb on the bow and force the hatch cover under water, sea pressure will force the hatch cover closed, improve the seal immensely, and stop any further leakage. another swimmer underneath the kayak would find it near impossible to pry the hatch open. Oldtimer, did you also cut the hole in your hatch to run the strap through? If not, i imagine it still will not be water tight... Lt. You can find a ton of rubber latches similar to the yeti brand on Ebay. They are just as strong and much cheaper. There is a different post where a guy used the same style of latch to secure his blackpak to his PA. I will try to post a link for you in a min... |

No I didn't put a hole in the tub. It may leak a tad but I don't think so, the seals are pretty tight. I'll find out when I get to warm water and try it. That would open up a whole new world in kayaking and Hobie is just the company to do it. |

I flipped my Hobie PA 14 in Puget Sound, the PA took on water and after reentry it was filled to the h rail. Worked with the Hobie dealer on Lake Union and modified the PA 14 with the following parts 6 x 84501921 Latch Kits 1 x 7200092 Rescue Step 71305001 HATCH SEAL LARGE BULB (7.25’) The video is the splash test, the PA had only about a 1/2 gallon of water in it.
