I have finally come to change the steering drum - I thought. But the pin was not possible to get through and out - only moving until not possible to use the blade screwdriver further. Using the vise grip does not move it at all - and I am pretty strong. Only option is to knock it back in and use the old drum for now, until some good advice comes along from the specialists..... Please.

You can either find a punch from a local hardware or possibly a finishing nail of similar size to continue pushing the pin out.

good luck

If you are going to use any style of punch, buy a brass punch. The metal is soft and less chance of damaging the pin itself.

I have had the same problem with pins on my steering drum. I used a "Drift pin" and hammer to drive the pin out. This was done on the parking lot of an auto parts store ( mid- fishing tournament. For a replacement pin I used a stainless cotter key (sized to fit) to allow for an in water repair. I made the same repair to my outback which lasted 5 years before I sold it.
