Post subject:  RUDDER SHAPE - Which is more efficient ???
I've made 2 different shaped rudders for my PA 12. Both are larger and stiffer than the original.
Both have about the same surface area. I'm not concerned about the material they are made of, just the shape.
My question is - which shape would be more efficient. The wide shorter one or the narrower long one ????

One with a thicker foil shape.

That is the difficulty with making blades from flat stock. Thicker foils will hold the water flow better under turning loads and not cavitate as easily.

Next best is the larger and deeper surface area.

Generally... like airplane wings. Larger thicker for slow speeds. Flatter for higher speeds. PAs would fit the slower speed category.
