Hobie sells a nice Ritchie 2" panel mount compass, P/N 72020004 @ $45.00....you need about 4" clearance/depth behind the compass to allow connecting your battery to power up the built in light.
IMO the best spot is on the front vertical bulkhead, either side of the sailing mast tube....make sure the compass location clears the front storage hatch liner when inserted.

Since my Humminbird fish finder has GPS too, a built in electronic compass is part of the package...that is a good feature and then, I still carry my ancient Boy Scout compass "just in case" all else fails and I need guidance!

Several compass apps available for cell phones. If you don't fish remote areas that you would not have coverage, most of them are free. Today's world I would go GPS, easy to use, accurate, offers several advantages over a compass and with a compass app for the phone you have backup. IF you just like old school then do as you will, but a base line GPS isn't that more expensive than a good compass, and much more versatile and well worth the money.

I think it is a mistake not to have a good old fashioned compass. no need for out side power to use it. Just my opinion.
