Will the new PA have a bigger rudder?

The new PA17? Yes.

This rudder was designed for the PA 17 and "works" on the 12 and 14, but will not be standard on the smaller boats. The blade extends too far aft and causes issues with loading if using the skids. It is optional for those who wish to have more steering authority.

I slide/launch and recover my PA-14 outfitted with the larger rudder, from my Hobie Trailex trailer, that is modified with 2.9" OD schedule 40 PVC pipes.... I have no issues with the rudder being damaged....yes, it hangs down about 1.5" more than the stock rudder, but since I don't stand the stern up on the ground, it's not a problem.

Same situation for me as for Dr.SteelheadCatcher. I have PVC bunks on my Yakima Rack and Roll and, most of the time, I will slide my PA14 off the trailer and onto a preinstalled scupper cart. I've had zero issues.

Hi, I'm keen to install the large rudder on my pro angler 12 (2014). I'm concerned that I won't be able to lift the kayak up onto the skids to load it onto the car roof racks. I currently use a side loader arm. Does the large rudder prevent you from lifting the kayak up onto the skids? If so has anyone figured out how to get around this when loading from the side? Help most appreciated.

Jules.....if you reread some of the replies, the larger rudder extends about 1.5" below the stern and trying to elevate the PA on the stern will mangle the rudder and assembly.
:idea: I believe a simple solution is to cobble up some 2 x 4's + 1 x 4's (unless you can get some full dimensional 2 x 4's)that are screwed/nailed together, and you place the new spacers under the stern prior to elevating the PA....that should provide enough safe clearance so the rudder is not damaged.

Dr.steelheadCatcher....thank you for your help. To be honest I'm not sure I exactly understand your solution. Are you suggesting making a U shape out of wood that I would place under the stern before I tilt the yak up? Apologies as I'm not familiar with 2x4 reference (from Oz). Cheers

Framing lumber. Standard wall timber is 2x4 inches x 8 or 10 feet in length.

1x4 = 19mm x 90mm

2x4 = 35mm x 90mm

Hi Jules.....yes, a U-shaped "spacer" made from wood.....as Matt Miller noted in his reply, the dimensions of our standard framing lumber....sorry, I did know realize you were "down under".
