I have had several Humminbird side imaging FF/GPS down and side imaging combo units and I prefer the down imaging units. It is just easier for me to figure out what I am looking at with a DI unit compared to a SI unit. The best thing to learn how to use the unit is to just turn it on and play with all the features and tweak it to how you want it. I like to keep the screen up that shows the battery voltage so I can keep track of how the battery is doing.
