I had seen a few installations of GT175 on the mounting boards, I board of the gunwales (to prevent drilling through the hull). It is apparent that the mount will be stronger if mounted over the gunwale as it doesn't gain leverage against the hull.
I didn't see this info so thought I'd share - the included screws do NOT protrude through the mounting boards. If you simply remove the boards for drilling the holes in the boards you will not put any holes in the boat. This seems like a no-brainer but if you are in doubt, you now know the guys at Hobie and YakAttack did these designs right.
