Hi,

I can only go by what the experts at Gudgeon told me ..... (thats why I believe you can never allow any hardner to contaminate the 105 Resin .... no matter how little)

Yes, I've seen studies both way as to how smooth is smooth .... but take a rudder/blade sanded to 600grit ... hang vertical and spray w/ a waterbottle .... watch the water drops ... do they bead???? Now try a rudder/blade sanded to 2000grit and polished ..... no beads .... the water just seems to disappear .... there's not enough friction between the water and the blade's surface to create the surface tension to form/create "beads". Now that's SMOOOOTH. Is it overkill???? Most likely .... but what else are you going to do on those rainy days that you can't sail .....

I use west 423 Graphite powder mixed into epoxy. After it dries I wet sand .
I did this also the first coat came out awesome so per the instructions I had I did a second coat when I came back the next day the epoxy had kicked to aggressive or something because now I have bumps all over the rudders. So my question is can I use a 5" orbital sander to sand them back down to be refinished? I never have in the past always by hand but sanding epoxy by hand would suck! Any ideas?

Hand sanding epoxy shouldn't be an issue. If you're having problems, you probably either need to use a coarser grade of sandpaper, or the epoxy is gumming up in your paper because it's not fully hardened. Power sanders have the nasty habit of removing a lot more material than you had intended if you're not careful.

Man I was hoping you would say go for it. I found this skill sander that has a pressure sensor maybe it would keep me from sanding to much. http://www.lowes.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10151&catalogId=10051&cId=SEARCH&productId=3089977&cm_mmc=SCE_gps-_-gps-_-gps-_-Skil%205%20Random%20Orbit%20Sander%207492-01

My best outcome was after I moved the project inside the air-conditioned house. All attempts until then resulted in bumps that could not be rolled out. I did all of this in the Summer in Florida. Even inside I had some very small bumps, so I did not ever resolve the issue completely. They looked mucho better than the same efforts with the same expoy products outside. Here they are after the effort indoors, to compare to the earlier posted pics of the job done outside.

I ended up taking the rudders done inside and knocking off the very small bumps with 800 grit, then used rattle can epoxy for final coat. Not the smoothest finish, but they look great and are protected, hard as steel, rudders.

I may make another attempt after I speak with expoxy expert shop here in Tampa.

 They must have some sort of clear on them from the factory that the sun eats off over time exposing the fibers beneath. It could be a clear resin finish but I don't think so.

To those who have done this:
Do you know approximately how much epoxy you used? I have some spare West 105 and slow hardener out in the garage. The fibers on these rudders are pretty gnarly.

About 1 to 2 ounces per coat per side.
