Somewhere in the last month I saw a tape product advertised to protect the bottom of our hulls from beaching. My 17 is ready for some hull maintenance due to beaching and after I fill in the various places that need attention I would like to apply that tape. Does anyone know where I can buy it? I cannot find the ad. |

I know West Marine sells a product called Keel Guard. We use this on our Fire/Rescue boat to protect it when beaching. Not sure if this is what you are talking about: http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/st ... ctId=51449 |

I contacted 3m and they told me that they have a product that was originally developed for the leading edge of helicopter blades. It is called Scotchcal. It is currently being used to provide an "invisible" shield on car hoods. I am trying to find it in bulk. I want to put a single trip 6" wide on the bottom of each hull. It is semi-permenant. |

If you get some, and have extra, let me know. That sounds like a good idea. I'm in the National Guard, and we have the same thing on the leading edge of the C-130 blades. but I don't know of a way to procure any for myself legally |

I just did a Google search for "Scotchcal" and ended up in 3M's website. They have more kinds of tapes than you can shake a stick at! (Including about 15-20 different kinds of Scotchcal.) What you might want to look at are the UHMW-PE tapes (ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene). They are clear, slick and highly abrasion resistant. The web page is here |

I have a good friend who works for Finish Master, I talked to him last night about aplying the urithane tape to the hulls of a hobie He stated it will not work and will be pretty expensive $70 4'x6" It is used to replace the Bra on the hoods of cars and Trucks and does a prety good job their but no way would it protect a gelcoat from sand and pebles.  Sorry thought I'd pass the Info On

Thank you for asking your friend, he may be right. 3m and several people who work with the product think it is a great idea, I bought it and will let you know next summer. |
