Matt, I have a Hobie 16 mast with a broken comptip and I got a new comptip to replace the old one. The new one is a few inches longer than the old one--are there different sizes for 16s, or did I get one for a different boat?? It fits in the 16 mast and looks just like the 16 comptip, just longer.. |

Are you measuring the entire length of the mast or just the comptip length? The lengths of the comptips should be the same not including the mast head or the plug. If you're measuring the entire mast and it's off an older boat, maybe the person that fitted the comptip cut the wrong length of mast section off? |

I got the old comptip off in one piece and set it down next to the new one. The new comptip istelf is noticeably longer. I have no idea when the old one was installed. I could cut a few inches off of the top to make it work, but I'm curious if they changed the lengths of the comptips over the years. |

Generally I dont like the word "cut" when reffering to my boat. I would install the new one and see if it works. |

The VERY original CompTips were longer in 1985. They were made so the Shroud tang didn't have to be removed. There was a two headed through bolt used and no epoxy. They dumped that idea right away. The longer one is a current version. Cut per the dimension on the instructions. Measure from the botttom of the extrusion. Should be just above the tang. Remove the tang. Epoxy in and re-install the tang. |

That makes sense--the old one had the through bolt. I was wondering why it came off so easily! I didn't get instructions, though, so I don't know the measurements. I could use the over-all length of the extrusion, not including the head and base.. So, since the new one is longer, I'll have to cut a little more of the mast off, right?? The actual length of the mast didn't change?! |

Dan look at the Hobie FAQ the instructions are all there I need to Buy mine, and Cut and install on my 1973 Mast. Thnking of sailing with it, and budgeting for a new mast and Boom. I agree with the reasoning behind the Comp tip But there are so many other all allum masts out there. In the International 16 Fleet comp tips are not required.
