Any tips for sailing the wave as opposed to my ancient h16 that I have at home? No jib... I hope I still have fun with it.

I just started sailing last fall and over the winter went to a resort in the Dominican Republic with Waves. I had only gone out 6 times on my own and here i was goin sailing in the caribbean. It was different than my 1977 Hobie 16, less power but still fun. Very easy to tack even with no jib so don't worry about it. Not as great as my ancient 16 but still fun (especially with the warm water, blue sea, and pretty big seas(waves). Have FUN

If the Waves are like those for rent in Maui, then expect the rudder cams to be missing, so with any wind you will have a weather helm. Or take a couple ball bungies and you can quick rig a rudder hold down (around rudder and rudder pin at bottom of rudder casting).

So.. a getaway minus wings? Which is going to be more fun with just 2 people.. the wave or getaway? Given my H16 background..

I haven't been there yet... I found that picture on flickr. I'm heading to Couples Tower Isle (Ocho Rios) in 28 days and was scouting my sailing options.

And yes, I will take the boat to the Au Natural island... I've convinced my girl to at least try it.. so that is on the list of things to do.. along with nude cat sailing!

Sunscreen, and lots of it. When your bits, and the mrs. bits see sun for the first time, don't expect them to connect if they're fried.

Be prepared to see a bunch of old, fat, and naked americans too.

LOL, I'll be one of them, but I'm not old. ;)

The girl and I will tan ahead of time... I already started.. burned my back and butt a couple days ago.. doh!

I just got back from Ocho Rios, and I saw about 3 waves out and a Getaway (it was waaaay out) and they looked to all be from a resort right to the east of the dock where our Carnival ship docked. I didn't see anything Hobie other than that.
Did the Dunn's River Falls, loved that. Had a much better time at the Grand Cayman the next day too and saw a few Hobies here and there. Nothing other than roto though.

Thanks for the heads up. How was the cruise? We contemplated a cruise too... decided to go all-inclusive and stay at one spot.. that way, I can sail everyday!

We found the cruise to be twice as good as we thought it would be. We had a nice balcony room adjoining our friends balcony and sat out there most of the time watching the water and Cuba go by. Food was great, lots to do on the ship (casino, comedy and variety shows and a hopping night club) and the weather was great. We're going again next year, maybe do the 7 day and hit Belize.
