Hi,

I'm shopping for a trapeze harness. I am not a racer and only sail for a couple of hours per weekend, so I don't need a top of the line harness, in other words, I'm cheap.

The cheapest I could find that is not the old style Hobie diaper is the Gul Stokes.



I was wondering if anybody had been using one and what they think about it.

Marc - I've never used the Gull Stokes harness, but it looks fine. I think it's important to get a harness with a spreader bar and, for a guy, a crotchless harness. This Gull harness seems to have both. Full harness with straps and back support shouldn't be necessary for most sailors, unless you have a serious back problem. The half harness (like a diaper) should be fine for most people and less expensive.

If you spend long hours trapped out, then the back support of the full harness is more comfortable. I liked my Murray's for that.

Then I picked up a deal on a 'used once' Hobie harness, and I was amazed at how much more comfortable it was on the hips. (Yes, my Murray's was an older (12 yrs?) version.)

Not for one moment, have I regretted buying the Hobie harness. This is the 'skippers' model, the half harness with detachable over-the-shoulder straps. Easy to move around in, comfortable, does the job.

Don't be shy, support your local Hobie dealer, you can't go wrong.

I like my Magic Marine full harness with adjustable back support.Very comfortable all around.They are a bit pricey but everyone who sails with me always picks that harness over my Murray Marine half harnesses.I have two half harnesses without the spreader bar and that "rainbow" pattern across the butt.It is a little embarrassing wearing that rainbow pattern (early '80's) so I always use my favorite Magic Marine full harness.
I did get Don from Salty Dog to custom make my kids a very very small butt bucket that we will always treasure(thanks again Don).We were visiting his store and getting my sails repaired when my son asked for his own butt bucket.Don said,I am sorry but we don't make them that small.Well my daughter chimed in "for enough money you will" and Don agreed ( I think he was punked out by a four year old)

Closest dealer is 4 hours away and he does not seem to want to support me. Been waiting since September for a main halyard, shrouds, jib blocks and a few other small parts. Well, technically, since November, I'm no longer waiting, I'll find another source for my parts before Spring.

I've heard good things about the guys in Quebec City, great sailors, very supportive of racing, know their stuff etc.

If they are 'slow', try Fogh Marine in Toronto, wonderful to deal with, quick and courteous.....

My plan was to try Québec city next. My brother lives there, so I might go for a visit instead of ordering by phone. Would still need to call ahead because at the age of mine, not all parts are in stock.
