Post subject:  Stubborn bolt rope and quick releases

I just bought an older Hobie 16 and have a hard time hoisting the main. Any adivce? What kind of wax is best for helping me get the sail up?
I also heard that in the rigging, those ingenious quick release pins aren't sturdy enough to use for ocean sailing. I find this hard to believe. If its so, which ones should I not use quick releases on?
thanks,
steve

Use McLube silicon-based lubricant or dove soap on the bolt rope. That will make it easier to hoist.

Also, don't use quick pins on shrouds/chainplates, forestays, bridles, or where the mainblocks attach to the traveller.

Post subject:  Quick Release Pins

I use the solid spring loaded toggle pins on my forstay, and one shroud. The forstay has so much tension on it I don't think it could ever come loose, but the shroud to chainplate pin I tape in place. I have always used the other quick release pins on my blocks, and have never had a problem. I know the Shroud Extender Kits, for solo righting cats, also use the hollow core indent/ quick release pins. I have a set, but don't use them because I've heard other experienced sailors like Tad, say not to trust them on shrouds or forstays. When sailing in rough weather, I advise tapeing ALL PINS regardless of what kind they are.

check the rope itself to see if it has been recovered and the old cover not removed
