Even the big boys can pitchpole. This video shows a 45' cat (Oracle sailing with wing sail) in San Francisco Bay doing a dramatic pitchpole. I saw this on the Today Show this morning. Apparently only one crew member was injured (ribs) and is doing OK. http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/video/oracle-racing-catamaran-capsizes-13835388 If anyone can find a better video, please post the link. |

I found a second sequence of a previous capsize on the same boat and this one shows the righting process. Basically a line attached to the upper hull and then a tug from the support boat. It seems that the sing sail floats really well and prevents a turtle. Brings back a chilling memory. I used to live in Sausalito and saw close calls and capsizes all the time out on the bay. High winds and wicked current. Can't even imagine my H16 out there in those winds. |
