You're absolutely right, you can't get that particular sail made here in the US, just like there are certain models/trims/colors of Fords built for the european market that aren't offered in the US - this is totally normal with modern global manufacturing. I just think its a little silly that here you have a US company manufacturing in the US willing to make CUSTOM order equipment (how many US manufacturers of anything can say that) and that's not good enough - need to get the overseas version.

Hey if you want that sail bad enough, I'm sure there's a way you can get it, I just wouldn't be surprized if it costs twice as much as a US sail and takes three to five times as long to receive.

So how is "Not as good" and "Just not quite the same build" different. Maybe I misinterpreted your meaning, but that was basically what you had said I believe.

Different... hardware, finish. Slight differences in measurements I am pretty sure. I never have said they lack quality in any way.

Most of the sails shown in this thread are event sails. Not ones they make on a regular basis, so not available to buy new.

I think what would be nice (and it's been mentioned here before) would be if Hobie USA modernized its sail offerings. You can only take the colored panels so far, although there are some that I really like.

What do you mean "Modernize"? The Hobie 16 is a one design class. We can't make any changes to materials or panel layout. Adding graphics is typically added weight and reduced longevity.

I'm curious, what was the plan for the mylar sails? I'm surprised that a different pattern and sail material was made for a few years on a one-design class.

Matt, I just mean the artistic, rather than the structural design. You have to keep the horizontal panels, but the colors don't necessarily have to follow those borders.

This was done during a period that material color options were deemed unavailable and sailors / Hobie wanted more color options... just like now :)

It was a bad idea for the class. We de-powered the Mylar design to help, but ultimately we cancelled the Mylar versions. Not going there again.

Sail colors have to follow the batten seams for the sail shape considerations and labor. Adding seams is not good. Dying cloth in stripes isn't happening due to lower volume usage. Has been said before... order custom if you want to mix and match.

I believe they are screened on.

I agree... Hibiscus and Blue Lagoon are awesome. If its just a case of having the graphics screened on, I wonder if there are any companies in the US that could do it?

Doing a quick Google search, it would appear that larger sail lofts like North Sails and Doyle Sails are equipped to print on sails. One would have to call to get more info - starting to sound expensive to me!

yeah, just having 13 color swatches online doesn't do me any good at all. Even if the colors were truly as pictured, and they often vary from computer to computer, I don't have the artistic ability to put them together well. Surely there is someone in the greater Hobie organization who does have the ability to mix the colors they have on stock and make that available to us!!!! ....Or maybe said artist would be able to recommend the addition of one or two complemetary colors to the palette they have to make some great ideas from us to choose from as "custom" sails. I think that would help immensely, be cost effective for the company, and bring back some of the business that is currently going to independent sail lofts...

No idea if these sails are any good...but they have a custom sail color "builder" on their site you can try out some combo's on.

Maybe Hobie would send some samples if you asked nice?
