70's Hobie 12 Monocat

Very hazardous I'd think. Flammable and maybe a bit like napalm if it does ignite?

If someone goes thru all the work of seperating the deck in an attempted rebuild/restore, would it be feasable to remove all the old styrofoam then just fill the hull cavity with us composites marine 2 part pourable polyurethane foam (either 2 lb or 4lb). If the top deck is in tact, I would put a layer of thin poly film between the deck and hull, then clamp together. I would then just pour in the pu foam to completely fill the void. I would think this would be a lot faster and easier than trying to cut and form all new foam (which I think would be very time consuming). When done the deck can still be lifted off (because of the thin poly layer (garbage bag plastic). For final assembly just put an adhesive bead around the perifery of the hull. I'm just thinking out loud on how I would approach if I wer to try and rebuild/refurbish one of these. I think this is the way Boston whaler and Mako power boats are constructed (completely filled hulls with PU foam). Any broken pieces on the upper deck foam that have broken can easily be glued back together with west systems epoxy (not polyester resin). If any of the upper deck pieces have broken away I would think they could all be glued back together with epoxy, then reassembled like a puzzle.
A lot of work no matter how you break it down, and the PU foam and epoxy is all very expensive. If it's a labor of love, and just a fun project (something to do), you might be further ahead picking up an old give away salvage H16, Laser, or Sunfish instead (parts are way more common and easily found).
One of my hobbies is building boats, it's a great pastime. Sometimes the attraction of a free boat can cost you way more especially if it wasn't a popular boat in the first place. I suspect there is a reason these were only made a few years then dropped.

Anyone who can get the plastic top off intact is a genius. Mine had a couple of cracks, and just kept cracking until I decided to just pull it all off.

I think the hull is PVC, not fiberglass, and I will try to mend it with that idea in mind. I plan to dry it out in the California sun, then seal the styro with something like Thompson's Water Seal. I will open up the styro compartments to allow drainage. Any boat design that allows water in, but not out, is a bad design. Rebuilding the deck will be old school plywood and fiberglass. Now it is more of a mission than a sensible project; I will no doubt spend more than it will be worth, but that's boating.

My hull exploded and I have two sails and misc parts for either of you that may end up with a good boat.

Does anyone have or could Hobie supply dimensioning drawings for the boat? Clearly if the boat was a good sailor but had some manufacturing problems you could probable scratch build the boat using 1/8" aircraft plywood and mahogany. All you would need is the rigging, mast, sails, and miscellaneous stuff to finish the boat.

We restored a Hobie 12 Monocat last summer. We spent the majority of our time using a sawzall and cutting the top lid off in sections, then removing and cutting out the waterlogged foam on the inside. Then we put two coats of fiberglass on the entire boat and have since enjoyed sailing it greatly. Pictures to follow.
