Post subject:  Auto tacking jib sys on H-20?

Was just curious, has anyone put an auto jib tacking system on any boat other than a tiger? Specifically a H-20?

From the drawings in the parts list and the assembly directions for the tiger, it appears that a portion of it attaches to the spinnaker pole. Is this necessary? Could it be rigged up to a boat w/o a spinnaker pole?

Thanks,
Mark

Yes you could rig a self tacker on the 20. Just tie a block to the bridle and use that for the sheet.

Problem is that you will have to cut the jib down significantly. The clew has to be able to tack in front of the mast. This will make the balance of the boat different. You will have to rake the mast way forward to get the balance right. I do not know if the mast will go far enough forward to compensate. That is a big jib.

Later,
Dan

It would probably work fine. Dan is correct that you would have to recut the jib, but you also have to add cloth to the foot, and extend the window... ...and the added sail area is further away from the center of lateral resistance so radical rake would not be required. Also, the portion of the sail removed is blanketed by the main so there is little in the way of effective sail area. The new jib with less overlap may also help the boat to point better (sheeting angle)and backwind the main less. The first of the Inter 20 boats had jibs that sheeted to the front cross bar. The sail required less recutting, but little if any change was required for the shorter footed jibs.
