I sail on a relatively shallow lake that has high wind, thus a lot of whitecaps. Would like to buy a Cat. Weigh 225 lbs and am very experienced with different types of small sailboats ranging from Lightning to Laser to a Day Sailer. Which model would handle these conditions best. I would mostly sail solo, though would like to be able to have my brother join me ' hopefully' out on a trapeze. |

The size and depth of the lake will be a deciding factor in this. If you looking for recreation use only then the Hobie getaway might be your best choice. The Hobie 16 has a large racing class is your wanting to test your skill again some of the best sailors. The down side to both of these boat is one person has a hard time righting them in case of a cap size. The Hobie 17 is a single-handed boat with room for company, especially if you get a jib! The FX-1 is a high performance single-handed racer. If you add jib and/or spinnaker along with a double trap your buddies will have a ride of there life! The FX-1 has boards so the depth of the lake may be to shallow for this one. Call me at the shop of you have any questions! I live in the Virgin Islands, sail and FX-One,,typically we have 15-20kt wind 2-4ft seas.....and the FX does very well I sail solo ,,,at 225 my weight is a big plus,,,course in light air (which doesnt happen to often) Im dead....its a great boat....... |

Oneida, A Hobie 17 has a lot of room, but very little bouyancy. At 225lbs you are pushing the performance limit. You would need a steady 15kts to keep a hull flying in flat water. And you would be slow downwind. Add another 200lbs and you would need 25-30kts to get you both on the wire. The boat that seems ideal for you would be the Hobie 18. It has lots of bouyancy and can be easily singlehanded (roller furling jib) and you can carry another 200lbs and still fly a hull. Add wings and you have a party boat. |

There's something to be said for the old 14's and turbos. fairly fast, and easy to solo right. They're kind of hard to tack in chop, though. Dave |
