I am a member of the Squadron for about 3 years now and have heard NOTHING but GREAT things about this event. In the past however I have avoided participating for two primary reasons: First I have always considered Memorial Day (and Labor Day) the seafaring equivalent to driving on New Years Eve and second until recently my sailing skills were more suitable for comic relief than vying for space in crowded narrow and shallow Big Pass channel on a holiday.

This year, however, I believe my skills have reached the level of "not a hazard" and am considering partaking, especially considering the relatively early hour that should limit the time for the amateur hour drinkers (I'm more worried about power boaters) to get liquified.

Let's hope the weather forecast improves as the current forecast is 6-mph out of the SE at noon, shifting and falling off, 40% chance of rain. Low tide is at 1:37 pm Predictions this far out are notoriously wrong.

I've got an 18 magnum.

I'm curious, you said they take away watches. Do they prohibit GPS, cell phones, and VHF or is it more a fun event and the honor system. I carry all three for safety reasons.

I assume match was a typo for watch. Seems kinda hard core for this type of fun run. If you really wanted to cheat you could have someone on shore keep time and signal you. Maybe now they'll take binoculars! I'll probably sign up, pay the fee, get the shirt and eat lunch but participate unofficially (as in not for prizes) and keep my stuff if they'll allow it.

If not maybe I'll just buy the lunch and the shirt, sail with the fleet and try to stay out of the way.

Can I assume that you'll be sailing the 16?
