I'm new to this forum and this is my first post. My brother and I bought a used 16 2 summers ago for $300 (Cat Fever). We have put some work into it and have had a blast sailing it. I have singlehanded it myself a few times but am not comfortable with that. With a decent wind it feels like a different boat without another adult on it. My brother and I have been challenged to right it together the three times we have gone over. Even if I grow more comfortable singlehanding it (sounds like a lot of people do that regularly) I've got the issue of pulling the boat onto the beach. I really can't pull the 16 up on my own. I'm thinking about buying an older used 14 (not turbo). It sounds like a 14 would be easier to right and I might be able to pull it up on the beach alone. Can someone who has had experience on both boats compare them? The 16 is a great sail! Is the 14 a similar experience? Thanks, Jim |

How big are you? I found the 14 to be too sensitive to weight, and weight placement, once I got above 200 lbs. The 16 was alot less sensitive to weight, and the 18 is even better about this. Is your mast sealed? My 16 was, but my friend's wasn't, it took 3 of us to right it once. My preference is 16 over 14. |

If you're 150lbs or less, H14. If you're over 150lbs, H17. The Wave is also a pretty fun singlehander. I'm 215lbs and sailed one for the first time this past week in 20+MPH in the ocean. They aren't as fast as the other boats, but a heck of a lot of fun and very simple. sm |

I'm 160 pounds. Don't think the mast on my 16 is sealed. I definitely do not have a mast float. 17 and Wave sound nice but I'm considering the 14 because I see a lot of the older ones for sale at a reasonable price in my area (Detroit Metro). Sounds like I'm light enough for the 14. Appreciate the input. Jim |

Hey, BigDee, what lakes do you sail on? I am on the north end of lake St Clair. I am not really comfortable single handing in anything over a few MPH, and still haven't had the joy of flipping one, and then righting it. This summer will be the year to do it. |
