Post subject:  Anchors anyone?

So I have acquired an anchor at a flea market and I want to use it on my H16. How do you go about storing it? Where should I tie the anchor line? Does anyone even use anchors on beach cats? I want to be able to anchor for snorkeling, diving, fishing, etc. Also, I think it could be useful to arrest the boat's movement in a tough spot.

Mine fits, just barely, through the 6" inspection port. When I replaced the pull off ports with screw off ones I had to shave about 1/16 from each side 'cause the lip was a tad wider. I keep a 50' dock line tied to the dolphin post. When I use the anchor I tie it to the end of that.

Basically this

Without the 2' shaft through the pivot. I don't know if the previous owner cut it off or they bought it that way.

My anchor is of the same type but its more than 6'' wide. I don't have any inspection ports, but if I did, the anchor would definitely not fit. I think it would be nice if I could mount it on the dolphin striker with some kind of quick release.

I carry an aluminum small anchor with 100' of line. I keep mine in a canvas bag ( old beat up gym bag ) and tie it just behind the mast and lay on top of the center tramp rope lacing, with the rope tied to it and the other end to the front reinforcement crossmember rod.
I love using the anchor when cruising along the beaches, it allows me to leave the 16 on the water while I go to the local beach bars to get food and drinks. I am glad I`m not the only one carrying an anchor on a Hobie, because it really looks odd, but works wonderful for my style of sailing.

When you anchor, how does the boat behave? I've never tried it. Doesn't it want to sail off, tack back and forth, or what. What configuration do you leave the sails and rudders in?

VERY GOOD QUESTION !!!

Rudders: Up and secured. I make 100% sure the rudders never fall down to the water, they will create mayhem, the boat will saill away. I tie mines to the pilons with bungees to prevent them from ever falling.
Sheets: I disconnect the sheets from the sails, that way there is no way they can produce any power. ( a loose main sheet can get tangled in the tramp and give you a bad time. )
The anchor line: I tie it to the vertical rod under the mast and under the horizontal fwd crossmember ( whatever thats called ). If you tie the anchor line to the forward stays where the Jib attaches, the Hobie goes a bit wild from side to side.
If wind gets too strong, I lower the Main Sail.

Thank you!!! I might just need to try that.

I may have to try this. This summer there were a few bars/restaurants along the intercoastal that would have been fun to sail to but they didn't have a good landing spot. If I could have used an anchor and used the strategy below, I could keep the boat out on the water while I'm eating. Plus with the sails up you make quite an entrance 8)

If you want it to weathervane into the wind you'd want mainsheet tension. And rudders up.

If you have the sheets in tight, a quick windshift can dump your boat, even with rudders up, especially if no one is aboard.

That's what I was worried about. If the sheets aren't attached at all, it can't go anywhere. I think it will weathervane naturally even with the sails uncleated.

I know this is not on a Cat, but I bought this rope storage mesh bag from a sailing shop and it is perfect for a small anchor and rope.
