I have a hobie 14 with the original old school mainsheet blocks. The top block has the sheaves staked instead in side by side, and the same with the bottom block. Is that considered a 4:1 setup? Would it be any easier to work the sheet if the sheaves were side by side blocks? I cant afford 250 for new blocks, any other options? Thanks |

The original set-up, with the fiddle blocks, was (is) a 4:1. There is no difference in effort between the in-line vs the side-by-side blocks. The main advantage of the side-by-side blocks is the stack height reduction, which allows more mast rake. The most important components of the mainsheet are the lower block (with the cleat) and the line itself. There's a Harken system on eBay right now for $226 - http://www.ebay.com/itm/Harken-6-1-Low- ... 288wt_1159. Use the rest of your money to replace the crappy line that's on that system with some New England Ropes Salsa. |

5/16". It's a bit harder on your hands than 3/8", but with a soft line like Salsa, the size reduction doesn't make that much difference. 5/16" line runs through the blocks so much better than 3/8". |

Does anybody make a set of blocks that's a little more economical? I want to update the boat but I don't want to pour to much cash into it. |

There are a ton of old 5:1 seaway setups on ebay for less than 100$. |
