Post subject:  Old style mainsheet traveler system thoughts?

Hi all, I've got a 70's H14. I just installed the new trampoline today (SLO Sail and Canvas) and ordered the lines and rigging from Salty Dog Marine yesterday. The blocks are missing, and I've got a local guy that can set me up (same price as any internet vendor, so why not go local right?) with the goods I need. He also has a conversion kit to get rid of the old style traveler (the one that had v-jams on the sides of the frame, to hold the traveler where you want it via tension) for $40 plus rivets.

Has anyone sailed with this old setup? I've only ever done just a bit of Hobie sailing period, so my sailing habits and equipment tastes are pretty blank at this point. I mainly want to know if it is reasonable to sail with the old equipment. I'd prefer to stay with it because I love having original, I love having unique, and I love not spending extra money.

Also, if anyone reading has (or knows a guy, who knows a guy, who knows a guy) that has the mainsheet rigging available (used, in working order is fine. would match the rest of the boat) I'd love to get in contact with you. I need it within the next week or so though (or at least to get the wheels moving in that time frame). Thanks so much!

I would for sure ditch the old traveler setup if I were you. There is a reason they quit putting those on after a couple few years of production. I see a LOT of 5:1 blocks on ebay (may need to add another attachment point on boom?). Id sell you mine as I just upgraded my 16 to a 6:1 setup...but I wanna keep em and rig them on my Wave.

I bought a 72 Hobie earlier this summer and upgrading the traveler was one of the first things I did. The old setup is just miserable to work with. If the winds aren't anything awesome you have to take about just all tension off of the main sheet to get the traveler to move. The V-cleats aren't fun either. There is so much extra adjusting with them and if you aren't ton top of things when making a tack. When going from a broad reach where the traveler is in the middle to a direction where the traveler is out on to the side the leeward v-cleat (even if not cleated) can get stop the traveler from properly sliding out to the edge. I bought an entire extra tramp rail set for $40 just to part out for the cleat and traveler. (Also included an extra lower block that I used to create a 7:1 low profile block.)

Anyone have pictures of the old style vs the new style? I believe I was using the old style with a new style boom (1 tang) until last weekend. The bolt thing that holds the cleat to the block broke so I am looking for a replacement.

I would love to see the new vs old. My H16 is a fairly original '79, and am guessing it is the old style. It really doesn't like to move. I was planning to lube it up good before going out again, as last weekend I realized that my standard operating procedure during a tack was to kick (with my foot) the traveler from one side to the other as needed.

Steve, by 1979, the old-style traveler had been replaced with the new.

The old style was really, really bad. It was essentially a flat piece of stainless steel plate that fit into the track. No rollers - the only "bearing" was a thin piece of PFTE (same material and thickness as mast bearing chips) that lasted about two seconds before it disintegrated.

The problem with your traveler is probably bent wheel axles and/or a gouged up track. You can replace the lower unit of the traveler and that will take care of the wheels. But if the track is damaged, you'll need to replace it. If that's the case, get the new, deep-profile track that will accept the newest lower unit with the brass wheels.
