I just posted this on the Wave forum, and someone has a similar question on the Getaway Forum, so it would be good to get the official Hobie dogma on this ..... I have a newer Wave and have always used the pin inserted during sailing. Why? Because I've not found anything in the manuals/literature that says I should remove it while sailing, and I never thought to remove it! What's the official Hobie recommendation on this? Matt? Those of you who sail the bigger fiberglass Hobies use the pin when raising/lowering the mast and I'm wondering if that's leading to confusion on what should be done with the Wave pin where the ball+socket mast set-up is the inverse of that seen on an H-16. I do notice though that my pin is now slightly bent (~170 degree angle as opposed to dead-straight 180). I would worry about the mast popping out if the pin wasn't used if a relatively unique combination of boat-bounce and shroud/forestay slack occurred? Thanks much! |

Never mind (voice of Gilda Radner) ... manuals for both Wave and Getaway say to leave pin in while sailing! |

FWIW, the 17 has a similar system, and I take the pin out when sailing. The rationale for keeping the pin in is that it will keep the mast attached in the event you turtle. However, in a dismasting (usually as the result of a rigging failure), you definitely don't want the mast permanently attached at the base. Odds are you wouldn't be able to remove the pin (bent). It would be a real mess and most likely result in a dented / bent / broken mast. Your mileage may vary. |

I demasted a hobie 14 years ago because the base came out of the cup in a violent... Several in a row... Pitch pole. The pin and ball joint we use now would have saved me the hassle back then so... Pin in. But the risk is damage as noted in other posts. Of course... Hobie 14 and 16 can not work this way. The step link pin must be removed for sailing on those boats and early Hobie Waves that use the H14 base and step casting. |
