Chase the Cats 2012 (or Cat Around The Lake) - September 29th 2012
http://www.lakenormanyachtclub.com/cont ... _id=211478

What got my interest is that it will have an "amateur" class and was described to me as a distance out to a buoy and back - my kind of "race". We are planning on being there.

Here is a link to the form:

Hey Jon,

I may do that one too. Are you planning to make CatFest on L. Norman tomorrow? I'm going to go check it out. I have very little race experience but I figure there is only one way to learn.

Distance races are a lot of fun and very low stress. I did the Duck cup this summer and really enjoyed it.

Hey Garrett, we'll be putting in at Beatties Ford Access sometime before noon and sail over to the action, but not participating, opting for the 29th instead. hope to see you on the water!

Nice wind predicted! Just watch for an 80s sail fumbling around the lake. :)

Hey Garrett - saw you out there @ CatFest. Didn't want to get too close and interfere with the regatta but we counted about 8 Hobies out there among the total mix of cats. Great day to sail!

Hey. Sorry I missed you. I kept a lookout for you but there were a lot of sails going around and we were pretty busy trying to keep it together. I learned a ton and have much better idea of how this racing thing works. I was firmly in last place (by a mile!) but we had a blast anyway. Everyone was nice and super helpful.

The event had a great turnout. We had 7 H16s so we got our own class start. LYNC is a super facility with lots of Multihulls sailors.

Hopefully, we can meet at the next one.

From our viewpoint to the east it looked like you were lapping them - not last. 8)
Happy to hear it was fun and gained some knowledge. Hope to see a good turnout on the 29th.

I am on the fence on this one, There is another race a little closer to me on the same week-end but a distance sounds like a good change.

Been traveling so finally catching up on the event. We had a blast on this distance race and the Lake Norman Yacht Club, who sponsored the event, were fantastic hosts. Light winds but with gusts up to 8mph. I recall it was set at 6 miles because of the lighter winds

Well, in the amateur class of four cats, we blew the start after what looked like a perfect approach... I was too early to the line so eased off and ended up in irons and behind the rest of the race and came in DFL. But we were gratified at the awards later to learn we came in second place in amateur with the handicap (which placed us behind a modern Viper with two years experience [husband/wife team], and ahead of another Viper and an H18.) Goes to prove an '85 H16 can compete even with newbs aboard against "ultra-modern cats!" Give it a try!

The overall and pro class winner was a 84 year old gent single handling his cat to first place. He confessed to us he cannot see too well anymore so follows what he determines as the fastest boat thru the course until the end and "just passes 'em up."

Here's us, after the regatta, with a couple of the Nacra entries from the pro fleet on the beach before the thunderstorm blew over us:

Fixed it for you.

An 18 square is essentially an A-Class cat with a 10 foot beam and more sail area.
