Post subject:  Typical hull and major problems

For a boat that has been in a beach rental fleet for 4 years, what major problems would be of concern? I have looked at Hobies which have hull problems - one had the rudder connection ripped off; one had the boot dislocated (boot might be the wrong word, it is the bottom of the four posts that go into the hulls and I believe is cemented or glassed to the bottom of the hull). Scratches and dings are minor. I am worried about major issues, and ones I might not be looking for now.

Thanks

Those sound like big issues that require major work to fix (if they can be fixed). I'd steer clear of anything like that unless you are looking for a parts boat. Always check for soft spots. Any fiberglass surface that moves when you press firmly on it is a concern. Beware of big cracks, blisters or seperations in the glass too. They may not look bad on the surface, but you don't want what's under them.

When shopping for a used boat solid hulls are the most important thing to look for. Most everything else can be replaced fairly easily. That said, replacing parts can add up quickly. Your best bet is to be patient and picky. Finding a boat in really good condition that has been stored under a cover or indoors is the best way to go. You may pay more up front but you enjoy it more and save money in the end.

If you're talking about that was used on an ocean beach, then excessive corrosion of the aluminum components would also be a concern. Inspect every place where a stainless steel fitting is riveted to an aluminum part. You're looking for pitting or other signs of corrosion.

Are you taking about Hobie 16? Wave and Getaway are more popular rentals. There is a big difference in hull repairability between fiberglass (H16, H17, H18) and rotomolded (Wave and Getaway) cats.

I would also check condition of the sails and comtip for UV damage. If the boat was left with the mast up 24/7 in full sun, I would expect a lot of comptip live already gone.

Some picture would be helpful.
