Post subject:  Hobie 16: perfect boat for Sandy
I tied my boat up the beach as far as I could get it on Sunday night. In Brooklyn, 12 foot storm surge.
Today I went to the marina hoping to find it, but the beach was empty. 3 boats completely gone. The whole marina had been underwater. Then I spied a mast poking out behind a boat on a dock 300 yards away. It was my boat.

Marina denizens told me they saw it floating around in the parking lot last night, then it got completely airborne, then it circumnavigated the marina out in the bay and came back in and wedged itself up against the docks.

Basically completely uninjured: this is the perfect boat. Sandy-proof.

( :oops: and as far as I can tell it didn't hurt any other boats on its journey)

Jennings Beach, Fairfield, along with much of the CBD of Fairfield CT, took a big hit. (CBC Radio report, this morning's news) I cannot reach Brian, likely because the power is out for 60,000 residents in Fairfield, and will be out for days.

I walked down to my beach at the first high tide of the surge. A Hobie 16 and 17 Sport were being slammed by waves into the dunes. The 16 was upside down without its mast (mast was up prior to storm). The trapseat wings on the 17 were ripped off. Further down the beach three 16's were crashing into each other as the waves pounded the beach. I just don't get why people won't move their boats.

My guess would be they were either more concerned about securing high priority things like their houses or they simply could not make it to the coast to get to their boat. Which would take a higher priority with you, an $3,000 boat or a $XXX,000 house?

Where I live in NJ, full sections of board walk were washed 1/2 a mile inland and every home within that zone suffered extensive water damage. Bayfront houses were completely destroyed.

Sandy put two feet of water in my garage but I still got my boat off the beach. The problem with not securing your boat is that it will end up inside someone's $XXX,000 house.
