Post subject:  Best bet for shipping boom, battens

Hi all, trying to ship a boom and battens for a 16. I guess at that length all shippers will consider it oversize. When I use the calculator on the USPS site I'm getting a price of $90 bucks for domestic (less than 1000 miles). Anybody have any ideas or experiences to share?

Thanks,
Jim

Small plasic pipe (like central vacume pipe) cut it too length, tape up the ends. Cheapest way may be on the bus.

What he said, exactly.

You can ship stuff on Greyhound that is some weird sizes pretty reasonably. I've had friends ship some expensive RC stuff this way that is too big to reasonably send via Fed-EX, UPS, or USPS. You have to go to a terminal, or possibly arrange pickup at one of their schedule fuel/piss/driver swap stops, but from what I understand its not rocket science.

Battens shouldn't be that bad, even though they are long. I've used Fed-Ex for sails within the states a few times and not had any issues. Lots of stretch wrap to make it a bit more solid of a package.

Thanks for the replies and ideas. I checked Greyhound this morning and they said the longest item they can ship is 82". Im at work now and dont have it in front of me, but I think a H16 boom is closer to 8ft (96"), right?

Closer to 10 ft. It's well over 110 inches.

Go to a flooring store that sells/installs carpet... the carpet comes on 12' cardboard tubes.

Cut to length and seal the ends up.

Battens, main halyard ( Comptip ) and a boom, i could use for sure. anyone going from NY to FL this summer or spring to any of the regattas? I could possibly pick up some parts from the midwest area for those in need of misc cat parts on my way down. i'm in Memphis TN. I'm pretty sure i'm going to have a really nice spare Magic Tilt trailer for a 16-18' Cat ready to go ...sale or trade for us cat sailors in the area too.
