We just completed a reservoir in my town. 125 acres, more or less. Nearly rectangular. Is this enough room for a 14' hobie cat? Or do I go with something else, like a Sunfish? Thanks in advance for your comments. |

A 16 will barely fit, but you'll get really good at tacking and gybing, which will quickly get old. I think a Wave would be a wise choice as it is easier to rig and can carry as much weight as a 16 more comfortably (think girls in bikinis - live the dream). |

I've sailed in much smaller spaces and had tons of fun on my getaway. I think a 16 or 14 would be great. I would get a hobie with jib, like a 14 turbo, the jib makes tacking easier. |

I wouldn't do it. I used to sail on Marsh Creek Lake, which is supposedly 535 acres. Probably half of it is usable, and it was still a pretty short trip back and forth. 1/4 that much space? Would be OK for testing a new rig, but I wouldn't buy a Hobie for a place like that. However, that is now, when I have much better water available. I suppose it all depends on your expectations. If you had a Hobie 14 and that was the water that was available, you would find a way to have fun. |

I say get yourself a boat! Maybe start with a Hobie 14 and see how it goes... You should be able to pick up a nice 14 at a good price. If your thinking you want to sail, and thats the body of water available, then just do it!! |

I don't think 125 acres is big enough, for a catamaran; you wouldn't you have enough fetch to generate enough wind to really be able to appreciate what a catamaran can do. Cat's are kind of hard to tack; I just don't think it would work well; like having a really fast car but never being able to take it out on the interstate, you know what I mean? If you're looking for something to kind of poke around w/ a couple of kids on board, just to be out on the water...but I think a Sunfish or similar would work a lot better.....JMO. Which would you rather ride around a parking lot, a Cadillac or a go-cart? |

You absolutely could sail a 16 on a 125 acre lake. You are probably dealing with half a mile across. Tacking a hobie might be difficult when you are first learning, but it's not once you get the feel for it. |
