Anyone ever used these jumbo "Hobie Cat" decals? Either the "Hobie" decal or the "Hobie Cat" decal. I'm thinking about putting a pair on my H16

This was the only picture I could find of one installed.

Again, I just put it them on today. I went with the 24" long version, which is a bit smaller then this one. Again, I need to take some pictures. I'm a bit leary of the glue on them, but we'll see. I think they look good.

Best of luck,

I've been searching for the large Hobie Cat decal (like on the H16 pictured). I think that was also used on the 20. I have not been able to find it anywhere.

I put the jumbo size on my H18. When I removed the stripes I decided to keep one of the fine black pin stripes, though I go back and forth whether or not to remove it.

Decals went on easily and have held up well to two MI summers.

Yes, I bought the Jumbo Hobie decals off of Ebay, and LOVE them! They've been on my 16 since last summer... on the beach 24/7 and they're still in excellent condition! They're very durable and a great deal... with your choice of colors.

I bought a set - very nice looking.
What's the best way to install them? Heat gun?

No need for a heat gun for installation on a flat surface like the sides of our hulls.

  1. Wash the hull with dish washing soap to remove any surface contaminants.
Use masking tape to create reference lines for where you want the decal positioned on the hull.
  2. Fill a spray bottle with water and a couple drops of dish washing soap to liberally wet the surface of the hull before positioning the decal.
  3. Remove the backing paper and line the decal up with your reference marks. If you need to reposition the decal more than a little bit, pull it completely off the hull and lay it back down. DO NOT try to slide it more than 1/4-1/2", as you'll displace the water layer and the adhesive will bond to the hull.
  4. Once you're happy with the position use a flexible plastic scraper (a credit card or similar consistency works well) and working from the center of the decal out, squeegee out the water behind the decal to promote a strong bond with the hull.
  5. Let everything dry in the sun for an hour or two, and then remove the positioning paper on the front of the decal.
  6. Any small bubbles will most likely be gone with a little more drying time, if not make a small hole in them using the tip of an utility knife.

Thanks A TON, i've done water slide decals on guitars but never anything as large as on a boat! Makes perfect sense. I purchased the large decal, blue, and it is really nice. I cant wait to see my restored Hobie looking great. This forum is Amazing....over and over again. FWIW, i've got 3 new hobie sailors signed up at DSA in north MS.... We've got 2 18's, 2 17's, 3 16's and a H14T... last year was a max of TWO total cats on a lake anywhere in a 300 mile radius of Memphis, I sailed every weekend almost. Hope to see some of you guys at Juana's Regatta in Navarre Sept 6-8.
