I've just been watching some videos of the NACRA F16. It seems they've designed their hulls with more floatation forwards and almost totally eliminated the effect. I have to admit I'm not sure the sailing looked as exciting but that wasn't anything to do with the lack of pitchpoling.

My buddy sails a F16 Blade, awesome craft,
and I've seen some spectacular pitchpoles, at speed.
Few of us are immune from swimming.....

One of the reasons I went from the H16 to the H17Sport is so I could drive the boat harder with less chance of pitchpole. The inland winds are just gusty enough that you had to keep your weight WAY back (even soloing) on the H16 to give yourself enough time (hopefully, but not always) to recover from a big gust when on a screaming reach. Keeping your weight so far back didn't allow for keeping a trim boat for optimal speed. On the H17Sport I could drive the boat even harder, but still maintain good boat trim. AND boy do I love those wings. :wink:

16 flip easy because of the location of the bridals, the oversize jib, and it could also use a little more buoyancy in the bows. but i have seen f18/f16 pitchpole at high speeds....

Avoiding pitchpoling while driving as hard as you can is part of the art and skill of sailing a Hobie 16... Or any cat for that matter. The anti pitch pole planes are all very well when your learning, but I agree with the general sentiment that they are "training wheels". Carrying lots of mast rake helps and learning the limits of your boat and ability will make you a better sailor. :D

Its all part of the fun... who would want to sail and push hard if you didnt have the possibility of mayhem... capsizing/pitchpoling is the best part... 18-20knts reach, that leeward hull just above the water... nothing more exciting than that... balls to the wall!!
