I looked in a bunch of cold-weather sailing threads but didn't find much on the individual neoprene tops & shorts. The tops, like the Ronstan 0.5mm and the Stohlquist 1mm, look very interesting and affordable. Mostly I need to reduce the evaporative cooling when sailing; I don't tend to sail in water colder than the low 60s F, and typically high 60s or 70s.

How do these tops work best for you? I see some references to using them with a spray jacket, but I don't quite see the point. When would I want to use a jacket with them, and when might I use them alone? How durable are they?

I have two 2mm neoprene tops. One with short sleeves and one sleeveless. Both are very comfortable. The sleeveless one keeps me cozy on cloudy, cooler days all through summer. I think tops thinner than 2mm would just be an expensive rash guard. Separate neoprene shorts and tops make it a lot easier to pee too. :D

Still thinking about this... what brand are the tops you use? I don't see much short-sleeve stuff out there.

Take a look at some kayaking sites, they tend to have more to offer. I like NRS products.

Both tops are O'Neill. Picked up one at a local surf shop and the other online somewhere, probably Amazon. Google O'neill Hammer. Also Body Glove Fusion and Billabong Foil.
