I just acquired a 12' Hobie sailboat. I need to figure its weight to see if I can put it on a our van's roof rack.

Most stock roof racks will not support any real weight. Even a Thule or Yakima rack will be pushed with even the smallest cat. There were some more sturdy rack mounts that require rain gutters, but most modern cars don't carry rain gutters any more. Your best bet is a small trailer. Harbor Freight has a light foldable trailer that would need an extension tongue and some type of cross members, but it will work and is inexpensive. Under $300 with 12 " tires.
