Post subject:  Looking for a Hobie for-University of Delaware Sailing Team

Hello all!

We are looking for any type of Hobie for the University of Delaware Sailing Team. Our team spans from people who are just learning the ropes, or shall I say lines, to experienced sailors. Collegiate sailing can be boring and practices can get dull when there isn't enough wind to get our FJs moving very fast. We were looking for something to make those dull days more exciting by implementing a catamaran, either a 16,18 or 20 (or really anything you suggest). We of course don't have much of a budget and are saving up for floating docks for our fleet of FJs so this endeavor cannot be too expensive. What do you all think, and do you have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Delaware Sailing

DelawareSailing :
There are a gazzilian H16 out there that are abandoned, or have just been sitting for years in peoples yards. Most will need work, fixing soft spots, bottom jobs, painting, and typically need some sail work. If you look around (craigslist, etc), letting the people know it's for a good cause, I'm sure the owners will donate them to the school for a tax write off.
My opinion is a big part of sailing is the knowhow to understand and be able to work on the boats and be able perform maint and repair of your boats. As a group project with a little guidance and leadership from people who know how to do it, my opinion it would be a good group project for your group to acquire and restore one or two of these type boats. The majority of the work is typically time and labor.
Once restored the boats will last for many years, so with an ongoing restoration program, after a few years you would have a whole fleet of Hobie Cats for your program. Way more fun to sail than what you have now in my opinion.
Just to make it clear, these would not be class ready racing boats ( too old), they would just be for fun and experience.
Just a suggestion
Bob

Check craigslist, there are Hobies for sale in that area all the time. Or contact the local Hobie dealer to see if they have any leads. Or contact HCA Division 11 to see of anyone's selling. Lot's of Hobies are in the Delaware area.
