We are going up on a fishing trip to NW Ontario not far from Ignace.

What am I going to need crossing the border with my H16? anything?

I ain't sure if I am going to, or want to bring it.. But I am kinda liking the idea of sailing very remote water...

Or anyone up that way have a boat I could charter? We are headed out this Friday.. Aug 31.. Plan on staying until Sept 6th..

I had to look it up, Ignace is probably at least 100 miles from me, otherwise I might have considered offering my 14 as a rental.

As ar as I know you don't need any paperwork for the boat or trailer. You are not importing it to leave it in Canada.

Having just done the border crossing this past weekend to/from a regatta in Toronto, and having done this several times a year for many years, I offer this advice:

Canadian Customs - going into Canada
Typically ask 6 questions:
- Car's license plate #. (The boat/trailer may block their camera's view of the rear plate.)
- Where are you going?
- How long will you be staying?
- What will you be doing?
- Are you bringing the boat back? (Emphatic "Yes". They want to make sure you're not importing a boat without paying duty/taxes.)
- Any weapons / firearms? (Emphatic "No". Don't bring guns/hunting knives, etc into Canada unless you're on a hunting trip and want to spend a lot of time filling out paperwork.)

Occasionally, they'll ask about what alcohol you're bringing in. Know the limits and stay under unless you're willing to pay duty.

American Customs - Re-entering the US.
Much tougher than Canadian Customs. Don't screw around with the Border Agent, they can make your life hell.

Questions:
- Citizenship?
- Where's home?
- How long have you been in Canada?
(Note that they already know the answers to these questions - they're making sure you don't have to think about answering them.)
- What are you bringing back? (Know what/how much you can, and it depends on how long you've been over the border. Generally, my standard answer is, "Nothing I didn't bring in with me.")
- They may ask you to open the trunk on the car or to look inside a motor home.

They have drug / bomb sniffing dogs that you'll see periodically working the car lines, too.

Documents to Carry
Not necessarily required, but nice to have in a bind:
- Passports for everyone (required)
- Boat registration (bill of sale if you don't have it registered).
- Trailer registration
- Car registration
- Insurance certificates / cards for everything

You want to be able to prove who you are and that you are the rightful owner of the big-ticket items you're transporting over the border.

Answer truthfully, seriously and decisively. It's like a job interview. Ace the interview and you spend less than 30 seconds with the customs official. Say something stupid, snarky or offensive and you'll get to visit secondary inspection, where the custom officials wear latex gloves. You really don't want to visit secondary inspection. I've been fortunate it's only happened once to me, and that was just a random selection. But it did turn a 20 minute border crossing into a 1 1/2 hour one, even if I did spend most of it sitting on a bench.

95% of the time, it's relatively painless going though customs, even with the boat.

Great advice MBounds!!

We have done this trip for years.. The organizer does a pretty good job.. We have all or passports and info all lined up and sorted in a binder.. Even going so far as calling ahead... We generally don't have problems.

The couple times which we have On the way into Canada they asked about Potatoes... Which we had.. :x (why they bought them in the USA knowing full well I dunno.. ) :x but we pull an enclosed trailer with the gear... and the potatoes were in the front of it... So crossing into Canada we ended up unloading most of our crap to throw them out.. It was weird though.. Here were are doing all of this on the Canada side.. With no supervision nor inspection... Ok...

Then this year coming back into the states on the "father/son" trip... The occupants of each vehicle didn't match the way the passports were organized.. So in full view of the Border the knotheads decided to pull a Chinese fire drill to straighten it out.... Brilliant!!!! They didn't just zip through that time like we usually do... You don't screw around at the US border... Ya just don't..

I just didn't know what Canada might want on the sailboat. I sure don't want to burden everyone with another huge piece of gear... and then end up being "that guy" at the border also..

Oh... the trip website..
