It looks like life's winding road might be taking me to Fairbanks, AK sometime next year......

Anyone spent time up there? What's it like and what are the negative aspects? Hopefully someone can provide a glimmer of hope, but it looks like cat sailling is pretty non existant that far north.

We were up there in the summer of '85 and loved it.
Great cheesecake flown in daily from San Francisco,
interesting 'can do' people, and yes, the winters are long and hard.
However, once you have accepted that fact, you live your life like they do up there.

Even in summer, the waters are too cold to sail safely.

Book your seats now for Hawaii... that's what most folks do.

Ugh, that's what I was afraid of. It'll be a good change of scenery and a life experience worth having, even if it means the boat gets moth balled for 3 years. It's a ways off, but I suppose I can't worry about it too much. My girlfriend on the other hand, has been reasearching it 24/7 and will continue to do so until next year..............

I know what I would be doing up there (not sailing).

Funny how Different Two people view the same thing ; i'd be
skiing UP that mountain , with the appropriate sized kite for
that day's wind !!

That is Not me in this shot ; to date, i've only snow-kited
on flat ground.

That looks like fun too!
I have a 3.5m Trainer Kite wonder if it could drag me around. Works on the dry lake with a dirt board!

Catamarans are FUN, but they don't work well in ice/snow-covered lakes.

If your already kiting with a dirt-board, then you CAN snow-kite with little training,
other than figuring out local wind conditions and kite-sizes !!
(snow has More drag than dirt) ; but he Locals can help you with That.

Here, view this ; it'll get you Wired !! :
