We all knew it was coming sooner rather than later. Laurie A. said he had been going downhill since the "Hobie, Master of Water, Wind and Waves" book launch party back in December. (http://www.amazon.co...s/dp/097042289X - buy it, it's pretty amazing.) Still, it's a physical blow. The sport has lost a great visionary. Condolences to Hobie P., Jeff, Paula, Susan and all the grandchildren. |

Sad news indeed. Hobie was a major influence to us in North SD County as surfers and sailors. We surfed Hobie surfboards and sailed the first Hobie cats from North County beaches. When we broke the rudders surfing the cats at Tamarack, the guys at Hobie Dana Point and later, Hobie Oceanside would always give us the "bro deal" on new parts to get us back out there. Always the visionary, Hobie was one of the pioneers of the surfing/beach lifestyle and a good man, he will be missed. |

Hobie Alter definitely changed my life. He provided the instruments for me to enjoy my many years of Hobie sailing including my first experiences with Hobie Cats - an 1100 mile voyage around the Baja Peninsula: http://brianjoder.com/BajaAdv.htm Second was the Hobie Hawk, which actually came into my life earlier as a 10 year old boy looking at one of these majestic R/C sailplanes hanging on the ceiling at the local hobby shop. I was never able to get one until I was in my 40's, and then a collectors item. A sad loss indeed... The Hobie Cat 14 was a revelation to us when my father purchased it in the mid 1970s - an amazingly seaworthy craft over many years in the belting sea breezes of Perth, Western Australia. I recently reacquainted myself with the Hobie approach to watercraft through the purchase of a Sport kayak that I immediately fitted out with a sailing kit. It was great to see that the innovativeness and attention to detail that characterised the Hobie 14 have been continued with the range of Hobie kayaks. Thanks Hobie Alter and family for countless hours of satisfaction and exhilaration on the water. A life extraordinarily well led sir. |
