Sorry if this has been asked many times, but it is hard to find limiting terms for Sail Storage.

How/where do you store your mainsail?

I will be leaving my new to me getaway on its trailer at the marina dry dock storage area, fully masted and rigged, jib on.

Where do you all store the main? I could bring it home in the car each time? I could add a sail tube to the trailer (there currently is none, any suggestions). Other? Ideally I would store it, life vests, spare paddle at marina.

Cheers,

If the marina dry dock storage area is secure, why not leave it there? Mine is in the bag and lashed to the trailer at the sailing center.

Sounds like a good idea. What type of bag is it in? Watertight? Breatheable?

I use an aluminum tube I built for my 21SE some 25 years ago and it still looks nearly new...on my 16, I built an aluminum "mail box" and the rudders fit in there too...it's so strong ,you can dance on it...built in '85. Good things trend to last.. :D

Whatever you do, make sure the sails are protected from mice/rodents. This is the biggest threat to your sails when storing them. Mice will chew through the bag and sails and build a home inside - in some cases dieing - causing damage and a huge mess. Mice can easily get into a sail bag that is just sitting on the floor, strapped to a trailer, or even on a low shelf.

SRM is absolutely correct about the rodent effect.

Next weekend, we will (sadly) put our Hobie into 'winter storage' mode.
I'll take a box of fabric softener sheets... and place them in the sail bag with the sails, and leave them in the sail shed.
Mice don't like fabric softener.

Now the challenge is 'what do to in St Maarten Oct 28th?'
Do we go for a sail on an America's Cup yacht, or do we sail a H16 or Getaway on Orient Beach?
Suggestions?

John,
how often do you get to sail a Cup boat? Whether a 12 meter or J class. No contest.
will you be in the area for the Heineken Cup? Bum a ride!

Chris, we spoke with the cruise line folks - they tell me that the America's Cup guys do not let you do anything on the boat other than drink, grind and raise the main. Three of us at $100 each for a one hour 'pretend' race, no thanks, I'd rather sail a H16 or Getaway at a topless beach! Ha.

Final sail of the season today, Turkey Trot, came 2nd and won a turkey!
time to pack the Hobie away.

cheers

Someone recommended putting the sail bag into a tube or box. I agree with that wholeheartedly. The tubes or boxes I've seen aren't obviously ventilated, but it seems like a good idea to prevent mold. If an aluminum soffit vent were used, it would keep bugs and rodents out while letting it breathe. It should never accumulate moisture to the extent that drainage is required. Perhaps someone with a tube or box could describe how it's done.

If it's an AC72, there will be plenty of topless lookers-on

The boats are Dennis Connor's old Stars 'n Stripes, and Canada II, I think 1988 vintage, the year Connor won the A. Cup back from the Aussie's.... They sail with a small jib, not a race jib... so the whole process is very much 'tamed'. No AC72's here.... otherwise my response would be quite different. Sorry about hi-jacking this thread....
