Hi!

So bit of an odd question, but does anybody drive a VW Jetta Sportwagen 2.5 SE and use it to pull their Hobie?

I'm not worried about whether the car has the capacity - it has. It's rated to pull 2000 pounds… What I'm more interested in is if any of you actually use this car to pull your Hobie and how the car does on the open road? :D

I pulled my Getaway with my 2010 Jetta Sportwagen TDI with the DSG (auto) tranny. No problems at all. My highway MPG went from 35 to 28, but I could run along at 65 MPH and the rig felt absolutely solid. I've never towed it in the mountains, so I expect that might slow it down a bit.

I have a 2013 Golf wagon 2L diesel TDI auto, I have not towed my Getaway with the car as the operators manual specifically tells you that towing trailers with the DSG is forbidden. It is interesting that the same car in Germany is rated for trailers up to 2,500 lbs. After dorienc's post I might reconsider.

I tow my new 1985 Hobie 16 with my '81 Rabbit it had a 1.8 liter engine for two years....no problem.

I did need to tie some heavy logs on top of it's front bumper to pull it out of my buddy Dave Lane gravel driveway....

I've towed my H16 a lot with our '98 TDI sedan and now our '03 TDI wagon. As dorienc reported, fuel mileage stopped being awesome but I can tow at pretty much any speed (although I try to keep it under 75).

Thank you for the feedback! I bought the Sportwagen and have now towed with it and its fine. It's like the Hobie isn't even there. Very happy with it! :D
