Halyard hook location

No answers on the H21 forum, so I'll try here.

How far down from the bottom of the mast head is the Halyard hook located on either a H18 of H20? How much space do you need to unhook the ring?

On my H20 mast the hook is 1 5/8 inches below the halyard sheeve. I'm assuming you're having trouble unhooking. Instead of a bowline on the ring use a buntline.

It will leave zero loop in the end of the halyard which gives you more line to pull the ring to the sheeve.

Thanks for the info, presently I don't have a hook, but plan to install one. It sounds like I just need to butt the hook plate up against the top edge of the comp tip, just under the mast head. There's a 1 5/8" drop from the top flat edge to the hook on the plate itself. Would you agree??




Thanks for the knot info. I had considered just swaging a stop on to the end of the line. Yeah, I know swages are meant for wire, but if sized right, they'll hold pretty well to line as well.

Doesn't the Hobie 21SC mast use a Hobie 16-style comptip (untapered with external halyard)? The halyard hook system is intended to be used on the tapered comptips with internal halyard. I don't know that the hook will fit or work properly on an untapered comptip.

You are right, but I hope you're wrong!

The SC halyard is external to the mast. Before I drill any holes I may do a soft installation with some double back tape or something to verify that it'll work. Obviously I won't be testing it by hoisting the sail, but by attaching another line to the ring and applying tension I think will tell the story.
