Is 17 MPH winds and 23mph gust too much for a hobie 16? I am new and the most wind I have seen so far on my lake is 8-10. Is 17mph wind and gust to 23mph too much for a me?

Honestly, that's when it reaaally gets fun! :D

But if you're new, then I'd wait before venturing out in the big winds. Perhaps you can tag along with a more experienced sailor to get a feel for the boat in higher winds.

Have fun!!

If you're asking it probably is. Get some experience, learn how to detune the boat (mast rake, travel out, down haul, body position) and then give it a shot. You will have fun.

The boat can handle the wind, but can you? I second Hobie 1616's advice. I'd say when the winds get to 25 sustained it's time to get off the water, because then it comes more of a struggle than fun. However, sailing in winds that strong will give you something to talk about.

Didn't get a chance. Storm changed course and gust were expected up to 60mph!!

I said I will pass on that one!!!

Do what you are comfortable with. go out with a more experienced sailor or work your way up to the heavier air. I have found that strong, sustained winds without the gusts are great. It's the gusts that will get you into trouble.
