I took my Getaway out in 21 mph winds today. It was a blast! It was the first time I went out in that high of wind and now I wonder why I would sail in less. At any rate, I also capsized for the first time. Actually, we pitchpoled, launching us well forward.

I am curious as to what exactly causes pitchpoling and how I could avoid it in a Getaway? I mean, we were flying along just fine and then next thing I know, I am airborne. Any ideas?

You have to balance the boat by moving the skipper/crew fore and aft. If the leward bow is getting close to the surface of the water MOVE BACK!!

Try raking your rig back a hole or two. That'll move the power back and ease the downforce on the bows. You'll need a trap for that sucker next!!

That would be true if it were just me, but I've got several young boys (8 and under), and the Getaway is a great way for them to get comfortable with sailing. I take them out in 11 mph winds and they absolutely love it. I don't think I'll take them out in anything more until they are a bit older.[/quote]

A "truism" uttered to me after a few rum drinks by an old salty friend who owns about 8 different boats at last count 8) From Sunfish to a 47 foot Hunter - Oh yeah, that one is his home....
